This past Saturday, as I departed the airport in my 503 equipped
ultralight,
I noticed the EGT on one cylinder reading significantly lower than the
other.
Don't panic I told myself... CHT's were fine, engine was running
smooth... must be a failing probe... no need for a precautionary landing.
The EGT stayed low and even dropped a bit more during the hour long
flight.
Upon arrival at my destination I found the stainless steel hose clamp had
broken on the low reading EGT probe.
The clamp was hanging loose of
course, and because of this the probe was hanging out of the exhaust
manifold maybe half of it's length.
The clamp broke right were the band attaches to the worm gear mechanism,
the other clamp had also started to fail with a crack starting to develop
right where the probe goes through the clamp.
Something to check on each and every preflight.
