Compound aircraft engine for ultralight and light
aircraft application - by Julius Drew.
The Compound Engine Corporation was at AirVenture 03 with their Compound
engine. The engine gets it's name from the fact that it uses some of the
theory of a 4 stroke engine as well as that of a 2 stroke. The engine has
no valve as it uses ports to move the fuel and air in and exhaust gasses
out.
The engine on display is the original proto type. It features four
power pulses per revolution, does not require pressure lubrication, is
very compact, has a very high torque output, has no dynamic vibration,
does not require a reduction drive, and apparently burns very clean! The
engine runs on standard automotive fuel, or diesel reaches 4000 rpm with
an internal reduction on the cam, which drives the output shaft to 2 to 1.
The unit on display was double cylinder 1200 cc with the pistons
traveling along the length of the crankcase. Expected power out put is
between 80 and 100 hp with a weight of 100 lbs.
