About three years ago a company called Hexatron Engineering came to
AirVenture with a two cylinder opposed, 60 HP engine mounted on the front
of a Merlin. The engine at that time was not yet in production.
The next year the Hexadyne P60 showed up installed on a Skyraider.
According to the owner of the craft while the engine was now flying it was
experiencing problems with the engine monitoring system.
At AirVenture 2003 Hexatron Engineering was back at AirVenture with the P 60
mounted on a Kolb Mark 111. According to the company the engine monitoring
system which was being produced in England has been replaced by a new
system produced in the U.S. The new system has eliminated the problems and
has allowed the company to move ahead and offer the engine for sale to the
public.
The Hexadyne P60 is a twin cylinder 797 cc,
opposed four stroke air-cooled engine producing 60 hp at 5750 rpm,
weighing 98 lbs. It has 4 valves per cylinder, for better heat
dissipation, has a low 9.0 to 1 compression ratio for longer engine life,
and uses plain bearings in the journals, for less weight, and economy of
replacement. The engine is fuel injected, single ignition, except
each cylinder fires from a different coil, TBO is expected to be well over
1,000 hours.
The factory indicates that they have 100 engines ready to deliver. |
