A number of years ago I did a story on the Rotec R2800 radial engine from
Australia. Since that time I have kept an eye on it's development for
possible use in one of my L'il Hustler's.
This year I saw it flying for the first time on an auto gyro called
Little Wings, which like the engine on it is not your
regular
auto gyro. In fact the original fuselage used on the Little Wing was once a
single place ultralight aircraft!
The Rotec R2800 is a 2800 cc, 110 HP, 7 cylinder radial engine
with a dry weight of 220 lbs. The engine turns out 3700 rpm and uses a
planetary speed reduction unit at a ratio of 3:2 to give a prop rpm of
2400.
The engine has an aluminum crankcase and heads, a steel 4140 nitride
hardened and ground crankshaft, with 4140 steel cylinders and connecting rods.
The dual ignition system uses automotive style spark plugs. The engine
comes with electric start, alternator, and voltage regulator.
Fuel is supplied via a Bing 40 mm constant depression altitude
compensating carburator, using both a mechanical and electric fuel pump.
The engine uses a gear driven dry sump lubrication system, and a common
auto style spin on oil filter.
Recommended TBO is 1,000 hours
